Stunning Mbappe hat-trick sees Real Madrid knock Manchester City out of Champions League

City travelled to Madrid after being beaten in the first leg and that gave them a mountain to claim in the second.

That challenge proved impossible to overcome as Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick sent them crashing out of Europe.

You can recap all of the action in our live blog below...

  • 'The best team won'

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has given an honest interview following his side being knocked out of the Champions League.

Speaking to TNT Sports, he said: "After we conceded the goal in the first action we didn't defend well, it was more and more difficult.

"We have to accept it, the best team won so congratulations to Real Madrid. Now we focus on the Premier League."

Guardiola continued: "It's a fantastic team, they deserve to go through. We didn't deserve it.

"It's the first year we didn't make a good Champions League season. We have to accept it and fight for next season to be here again.

"Of course, Real Madrid are contenders to win the Champions League now, but there are other good teams around."

  • Bellingham reacts

Jude Bellingham has now recapped yet another special night for Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Bellingham told TNT Sports: "It was a good evening and a good performance from us. It was a really enjoyable game to play in.

"The most important thing for us was the defensive side of the game. We knew that once we boxed that off we could attack with more freedom and that was the key tonight and in the other game.

"They [Man City] have had some injuries and we are also on the back end of that and welcoming some of the lads back.

"You always want to play teams at their best and when you see he [Erling Haaland] is not in the team you obviously hope it is nothing serious. He is a good mate of mine and I hope it is not too bad.

"You play against what you are up against and I thought we managed it well today. They still have other players that can step in and cause damage."

  • 'I want to write history'

Kylian Mbappe has reacted to his hat-trick and Real Madrid's comfortable win over Manchester City tonight.

"A perfect night for the team," he told UEFA. "We wanted to win. We wanted to qualify for the next round.

"For us, it was only logical that Real Madrid reached the next round of the Champions League.

"When you play against Manchester City it is always a difficult game but we knew that at home we would be very strong.

"We played better as a group and we were able to give a lot of joy to the fans. We have to continue in this way if we are to win what we want to win this season.

"I want to play well here, I want to make a mark on the season. I want to write history with Real Madrid.

"The adaptation period for me has ended and now I have to show my quality."

  • Equalling Ronaldo

Kylian Mbappé is the only player to have scored in both legs of a Champions League knockout stage tie against Man City twice.

He's managed to do so in the 2016-17 campaign for Monaco and now in this season’s play-off round.

Mbappe is also the only player to score a hat-trick in a knockout stage game against a side managed by Pep Guardiola.

The Frenchman is now on seven goals for Real Madrid in the Champions League this season.

That's the joint-most by a player in their first campaign for the club in the European Cup/Champions League, along with Cristiano Ronaldo (7 in 2009-10) and Justo Tejada (7 in 1961-62).

  • Unwanted firsts

For the first time in his managerial career, Pep Guardiola has seen his side eliminated from the Champions League prior to the last 16.

For Man City, meanwhile, it’s the earliest they’ve exited the competition since 2012-13 (eliminated in the group stage).

On top of that, this was City's 13th defeat of the season across all competitions.

That's now the most ever by a Guardiola side in a single campaign in his managerial career (previously lost 12 in 2019-20).

  • Real Madrid 3-1 (6-3) Man City: FULL TIME

That's that, Manchester City are out!

Pep Guardiola has failed to reach the last 16 of the Champions League with Man City for the first time.

They failed to lay a glove on Real Madrid tonight.

Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick leads Real to glory and they will now play either Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen.

  • GOAL! Real Madrid 3-1 (6-3) Man City: Nico Gonzalez

90+1' Man City have a consolation.

Omar Marmoush's free-kick hits the bar and the ball falls neatly for Nico Gonzalez to score with ease.

City have something to celebrate as Gonzalez scores his first Champions League goal and his first for City.

VAR take a look and award the goal after a check.

  • Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City

    90' Into stoppage time.

We'll have another two minutes and then Man City can be freed from their misery at the Bernabeu.

Vinicius Junior and Fede Valverde come off for the hosts.

Endrick comes on along with David Alaba.

  • Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City

88' Sorry, Thibaut. I've jinxed you.

He's forced into action to deny Abdukodir Khusanov.

And the powerful strike from close range hits him straight in the stomach and leaves him grounded.

After a few moments on the floor, he's back up and ready.

That's the most action he's seen all night.

  • Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City

85' Thibaut Courtois is all Real Madrid fans.

He's probably had that smile on his face all game too, as he's not had to make any real tough saves at all.

The Belgian won't have many more easier games.

We're into the final five minutes in Madrid.

  • Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City

82' The game is slowing down now.

Man City are looking to just see this out.

They don't want to concede again and they want this game to be over as soon as possible.

Luka Modric comes on for Aurelien Tchouameni for Real.

Stuart Pearce live on 90mins: "I don't think City have been aggressive enough in their press.

"Madrid have enjoyed their night playing against them."

  • Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City

79' Real Madrid make some changes.

Kylian Mbappe comes off to a standing ovation.

He completely deserves that after an unreal performance.

Former Man City man Brahim Diaz replaces him while Dani Ceballos comes off for Eduardo Camavinga.

City respond and take Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan off as James McAtee and Mateo Kovacic replace them.

  • CHANCE! Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City

    76' Another save for Ederson!

Vinicius Junior is the latest player to unleash a shot at the Man City goal but he can't beat his compatriot.

His right-footed shot is beaten away and cleared.

Man City then look to cause some problems at the other end, with Phil Foden firing a powerful effort at goal.

Thibaut Courtois has his palms stung for the first time.

  • Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City

73' The home fans are enjoying themselves now.

Every pass is getting an 'OLE!' from the stands.

This must be humiliating for Manchester City.

They're so used to being on the other side of this situation, but their dismal season sees them the victims this time.

The players will want the final whistle to blow now.

  • Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City

70' Into the final 20 minutes now.

Phil Foden has had Man City's first shot on target, although it didn't cause any problems for Thibaut Courtois.

Then at the other end, Kylian Mbappe absolutely breezes past Nathan Ake before finding Vinicius Junior in the box.

Fortunately for City, Ruben Dias slides in to block.

  • Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City

67' Real Madrid are celebrating tackles.

They're certainly through at this point, but they're still showing their passion for defending at the Bernabeu.

Fede Valverde ushers Omar Marmoush out and then jumps up to celebrate with Raul Asencio.

The home fans go crazy with them.

Stuart Pearce live on 90mins: "They're enjoying their evening's work at the moment."

  • Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City

64' What were Man City doing there?

They had every man behind the ball but somehow they didn't manage to spot Kylian Mbappe on the right.

It leads to Phil Foden having to track back and cover.

Mbappe easily moves past Foden and shoots, with his finish beating Ederson and finding the bottom corner.

He is now the first player to score a Champions League knockout hat-trick against a team managed by Pep Guardiola.

  • GOAL! Real Madrid 3-0 (6-2) Man City: Kylian Mbappe

    61' NOW HE DOES HAVE A HAT-TRICK!

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE THIS IS!

That's his second hat-trick for Real Madrid and his third in the Champions League in his career.

This time, he cuts in onto his weaker left foot and bends a finish into the bottom corner.

Mbappe now has 501 goal contributions in his career and he has reached the 500 milestone at the age of 26.

That's quicker than both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

  • CHANCE! Real Madrid 2-0 (5-2) Man City

    58' Kylian Mbappe should have a hat-trick!

Fede Valverde sends in another dangerous low cross from the right and Mbappe throws himself at it...

But Ederson comes out to meet him and somehow saves!

The pair clash and the Frenchman receives some treatment but he's okay and will continue.

  • Real Madrid 2-0 (5-2) Man City

57' We're almost at the hour mark.

Here's a live point of view from the Man City defence.

You can barely see Kylian Mbappe he's so quick.

Mbappe is causing no end of problems for City along with his fellow superstar teammates up front.

Stuart Pearce live on 90mins: "It's been a very, very comfortable evening for Real Madrid.

  • Real Madrid 2-0 (5-2) Man City

54' Another shot comes in from Rodrygo.

This time he hits the target but Ederson does well to save.

On the next attack, Fede Valverde drills in a superb cross.

Antonio Rudiger is there to tap home but Man City do well to clear before the former Chelsea man can score.

  • Real Madrid 2-0 (5-2) Man City

51' Rodrygo wastes a decent chance.

Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham combine before the ball falls to Rodrygo on the edge of the box.

He unleashes a strike but it balloons over the bar.

Real have started the second half threatening again.

As for Man City, they continue to struggle to create.

  • Real Madrid 2-0 (5-2) Man City

48' There's an early yellow card.

And you won't see an easier one than that.

Nico Gonzalez almost drags Vinicius Junior's shorts off.

He gets a full grasp of the Brazilian's shirt and then moves onto his shorts to bring Vini Jr. down.

    No complaints there.

  • Real Madrid 2-0 (5-2) Man City

    46' We're back underway.

    Neither side have made changes.

Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne remain on the bench.

Maybe Pep Guardiola doesn't want to risk them in a game that already seems to be lost.

They've got a huge game against Liverpool at the weekend.

  • Real Madrid 2-0 (5-2) Man City: HALF TIME

Only Lionel Messi (7) has more Champions League goals against teams managed by Pep Guardiola than Kylian Mbappe (6).

You just can't stop Mbappe tonight.

Both of his goals have been incredible and there's nothing Man City have been able to do at the Bernabeu.

Stuart Pearce live on 90mins: "This front three or four for Madrid are outstanding, the bottom line is, they're a handful for opponents.

"If someone's going to win the Champions League this year, you've got to beat Real Madrid to do so."
